- the four seasons.
“comforting life lies with a beautiful mind.”

born in autumn.
thank you for everything.
When I think about Pina Bausch, I also bring together the name of Sylvie Guillem to mind. I would also talk about her. At this time Sylvie Guillem is running an exhibition for a long period of one month, titled “HOPE JAPAN TOUR” under her strong will after receiving sad news of the Great East Japan Earthquake. She keeps dancing in all parts of Japan for her age of forty six, so I cannot see her spiritual strength and strong willpower without deepening my sense of reverence.
I viewed such her stage the other day. The item was William Forsythe “Rearray” and Mats Ek “Ajö (Bye)”. Especially Mats Ek “Ajö (Bye)” was so wonderful that I was voluntarily moved to tears. “Ajö “ is a work that depicts “The life of a woman”. Guillem appears on the scene with costume of tired, just a middle aged every woman that cannot be seen as a great dancer. Then she dances to express one woman interacting with herself and her growth process, sometimes uncouthly. But although how she dances uncouthly, she can put meaning on every step and can convey to audience the emotion of the woman through her whole movements. It could be said that she is depicting her own life through playing that of one woman. The music was the last sonata of Beethoven titled as “Ajö(Adieu)”. Considering the content and real intention of the music, the play was adequate to the last program. This work could be one of her masterpieces.
“For me, dancing has never been “limited to classical dance”. From the beginning, I was drawn to what the stage has, power, infinity, mystique, and whole contained possibility. From the era at the Opera in Paris, I have been fully enjoying dancing, and believed that the versatility is the only way to keep evolving.”
This is the words by Guillem, and all audiences to go to see her stage would recognize that she has been creating work that was exactly expressed in the words. Also Guillem, the person who is approaching the final stage of her career, would keep questing her own way of expression until the end of her career as Pina Bausch. Pina Bausch and Guillem are saying a common thing that is to be; “would die if without keep dancing”. It would mean that we have to keep searching after our own expression.
Among the stages that I have ever viewed, there was none but the one by Pina Bausch that shocked me with a great impression. It was now seven years ago, but her “Café Muiller” penetrated me, a nostalgia-longer and classical person, with a surprise that I have never touched, and excitement beyond description. Since I was queried by her, “What is an expression that does not need interpretation?” I am still on the way to seek it. Pina Bausch is an entity who has had much effect on my presentment.
And yesterday, at the Tokyo International Film Festival, I watched “pina” the distribution in Japan of which had been long-awaited since the production was announced. Although there are a lot of admires, there are not so many in Japan. I had been worrying for many years that it would not be delivered and the only way to view it would be at home with 2D, so it is really profound to see that it was decided to be delivered and screened in Japan. (Public open in Japan is from February 25, 2012.) Before the showing, the director Wim Wenders visiting Japan talked that it took twenty years for elaborating the plan of this movie. He said he had sought for the way to visualize the world of pina strictly, and affirmed that finally it became possible to create ‘pina’ when the digital 3D technology was accomplished a few years ago. At last after twenty years the production started, but pina, who also had been longing for the production of the movie, passed away suddenly. This work became a wonderful one that makes us feel the memorial to pina, relic of pina, and full love for pina. I think most of audiences could not hold back the tears. I had a new understanding that the existence of Pina Bausch is a great entity for me that make me learn to grope and not to hove. It became a shocking and compelling experience in my life of movie viewing, so I strongly recommend all who have not seen this, to view this in a movie theater with 3D.

I saw a movie Copie Conforme by Abbas Kiarostami about six month ago. It was a great work that made me have a wry smile of ‘well done’ when I walked out of the theater, that was after a long time In this movie, there is a picture named Mona Lisa in Toscana. That had been acclaimed for more than couple hundred years without being noticed as a fake, and it was only one hundred years ago when it was judged as a forged painting. But due to the outstanding goodness of the workmanship, it is still popular as ‘a counterfeit more beautiful than the real one.’ “All in the world are copies. There is no ‘genuine article in essentials’. Even Mona Lisa by da Vinci is no more than a copy of the model lady, and also the lady is a copy of DNA of her parents”, said James played by William Shimell. This movie told us that “A work should not be evaluated whether that is fake or genuine, but the consciousness of the spectators will add the value to the work.”
There are many copied objects produced in SL, and there is no existing law to regulate them. The real situation is to rely on the morale of the person who makes the copies. One of my friend said, “It is fun to see a well-made copies in SL.” How the copy maker feels affection and respect will be clearly expressed in the work. If we are able to sense that, we may evaluate the work as we appreciate the Mona Lisa at Toscana. An elaborate copy might be necessary in order to evaluate the original.
Today is the 66th memorial day atomic bomb attacked the city of Hiroshima.
We are passing our days in tense situations. I find myself with shallow breath and end up with feeling my stomach heavy. The news reported that a high level of radiation of 10 Sievert per hour was observed at Fukushima 1st nuclear plant, and also middle-class earthquakes happened frequently at Kanto and Tohoku area. Again I feel some ominous sign of another big earthquake. Regarding the radiation, I am gnawed by anxiety that eventually I will not be able to live in Tokyo where I was born and bred. On the day before March 11 of the earthquake, I wrote on the twitter, “I wish there would not be bigger earthquake anymore…” Most of anxieties have come true, so I would like to keep thinking about lightness only.
This fall, the Bayerische Starrtsoper will visit Japan for performance. The program is Roberto Devereux, Lohengrin, and Ariadne auf Naxos. I will go to the theater to see the Lohengrin. Surprisingly enough, Sylvie Guillem will join the performance in Japan for almost full one month. And at Iwate, the afflicted area, she will dance the ‘Bolero’ that is said to have been sealed, at almost no charge. I express cordial gratitude for her spirit. In this autumn, I am going to visit various locations to see her performance. After the earthquake disaster happened, I made myself think anew about the value of art. I had not noticed that arts could so sooth human mind. The performance in Japan of Gidon Kremer taught me that. The Chaconne he played struck my heart, and I was not able to prevent the tears from flowing.
This is his message when he visited Japan the other day.
“The music is an infinite source of energy. The power will extend despite moving from one century to the next. When we are thinking about great composers such as Bach, Shostakovich or Brahms, we will be connected to the eternal values and be able to get to something which teaches us that we are not alone in this world and still there is a harmony (accord) which reads us to existence even in an utmost chaos. When listening to Bach, we are never alone and there is always someone whom we can talk to. When walking together with Shostakovich, we are able to realize that we can overcome every difficulty with high spirituality and inherent strength. Not only the classical but also modern composers can be role models for us bespeaking that we are living together in “one” world which does not have geographical or temporal border, and is free from cogitation of physics and politics, although our life is limited.Beauty and affectivity will interconnect us stronger than television or internet. May our ears and eyes be able to see and listen to “each other”. May the flow of energy that was expressed in the sound reach us all, and through that, may all of us feel that we are alive, and breathe and understand mutually.”
Whenever I log-in the Second Life and meet various arts, I feel consolation and energy to live although they are only in a world of the internet. That was felt as a matter of course before the earthquake disaster, but now I feel it has a special significance.
